The event also featured several other speakers and performances including school children who defined the alphabet in Islamic terms except for "X" ("X is very hard for us to rhyme, therefore we aren't going to waste your time"). | | April 26, 2007 | Religious Values and the Practice of Law. The Ethics of Surveillance: Monitoring Mosques. Speaker Professor David Harris, author of Good Cops: The Case for Preventive Policing offered four ways in which the Muslim community and law enforcement can work build their trust. First, was that the question should be asked if informants should be put into mosques. After that he indicated that if "passive" informants (those who just listen and gather information) are allowed, there has to be some sort of fact-based reasonable suspicion before allowing "active" informants. Second, he indicated that there should be no enticement or egging on of targets. Third, informants should not be used as a first resort. Finally, he indicated that there should be mutual education. What should the law enforcement community be looking for. Law enforcement should learn the language used by the speakers and how it is interpreted in the native language as there may be a different interpretation when translated into English. Prof. Harris also expressed some skepticisim about the quality of the terror cases and convictions obtained by the government. Foria Younis, a former FBI agent, was the first Pakistani agent. She indicated that she spoke openly and said things that the Muslim community didn't like to hear. She said that since she was coming from law enforcement and has traveled to many Muslim countries, she has seen many ugly things committed at the hands of Muslims. From her own observations and conversations she felt that ordinary Muslims need to do more to speak out against the tragedy of 9/11 and terrorism. Adem Carroll, Chair of the Muslim Consultative Network and and co-host, WBAI Radio War on Immigrants Report, indicated that in his work he has worked with families of detainees as well as families of the victims of 9/11. He indicated many instances where law enforcement really set back their relationship with the community by their actions. He also indicated that there existed a real imbalance between the power of the government and the community who lacked resources. CLE credit was available. Fordham Law School's Institute on Religion, Law and Lawyer's Work hosted the event with Amy Uelmen serving as moderator. MuBANY was a co-sponsor. Held at Fordham Law School.
