A
presentation designed to provide newcomers with a basic introduction to
"Shari’ah." The presentation provided an overview of the
structure of Islamic law, focusing on sources, rules of interpretation,
and jurisprudence. Then the use of
Islamic Law in modern legal systems abroad was surveyed. Lastly, using
family law as
an example, the presentation illustrated how Islamic law has played a
role in the U.S. legal system.
Speakers
Professor
Sadiq
Reza Professor Reza teaches criminal law, criminal procedure, and
Islamic law at New York Law School. In 2008 he was named a Carnegie
Scholar for his scholarship on criminal procedure under Islamic law. He
has been a visiting scholar at Harvard's Islamic Legal Studies Program
and a visiting professor at Boston University School of Law and American
University's Washington College of Law. In 2007 he was named NYLS’s
Teacher of the Year.
Abed Awad, Esq. Mr. Awad, an attorney in
private practice, specializes in on complex matrimonial law, commercial
law, Islamic law and international law. Awad has been qualified and
recognized as an expert witness in Islamic law and Middle Eastern law by
courts throughout the United States. Mr. Awad is an Adjunct Law
Professor at Rutgers Law School and Pace Law School, where he teaches
Islamic Jurisprudence and Matrimonial Litigation. Mr. Awad is a Member
of the Board of Directors, KARAMAH (Muslim Women Lawyers for Human
Rights).

| | Ramadan 2009 | MuBANY recently sent Ramadan
Greetings letters to the NYSBA, NYC Bar Association, the Minority Corporation Counsel Association, law firm diversity managers, and various legal employers to inform them that their
Muslim colleagues may be fasting during Ramadan. We sent a similar
letter to NALP and local recruiting departments so that they are aware
that Muslim law students may be fasting during the fall recruiting
activities.

Day | MuBANY teamed up with the Asian American Legal Defense
and Education Fund (AALDEF) for their 2009 Election Protection
Efforts.

Fifth Annual Muslim Bar Association
of New York Ramadan Iftar was a
huge success. We apologize to anyone who we had to turn away at the
door. Because of limited seating we had to limit ourselves to those who
had RSVP'd. So if you are interested in future MuBANY events please be
sure to RSVP early.

| MuBANY SUMMER MIXER! The Muslim Bar Association of New York invited
all Muslim lawyers, law students, and legal professionals in the area to
join us for a fun evening to celebrate the summer. It was a great
opportunity to network, catch up with old friends, make new
connections, and strengthen bonds with fellow Muslims legal
professionals! It was held at 230 Fifth Rooftop Garden - 5th Ave & 27th Street.

| MuBANY's Annual General Meeting
featured Guest Speaker, U.S. Eastern District Bankruptcy Judge Elizabeth
Stong. MuBANY announced the results of its
Board of Directors election. We also ratified amendments to the
bylaws. The highlight of the evening was hearing Judge Stong talk about
her experiences interacting with judges in Algeria, Tunisia and the
Middle East. She also imparted words of wisdom that she has picked up
during the course of her career. We thank Judge Stong for accepting our
invitation and we thank Debevoise & Plimpton for hosting the
