Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is MuBANY?
A:  MuBANY is a member-driven bar association open to any interested New York area lawyer or law student organization.  MuBANY’s membership and leadership currently consists of a range of Muslims from a variety of practice areas.  Our membership includes large, mid-size, and small firm attorneys, solo practitioners, government attorneys at the local and state levels, and their work covers the spectrum from complex civil litigation to real estate law.  By way of legal education, our members are law students, practicing attorneys with U.S. law degrees, and overseas-trained attorneys with LLM degrees.  View our bylaws

Q:  Why was MuBANY created?
A:  Recognizing the unique responsibility that Muslim attorneys have in our society, the Muslim Bar Association of New York (MuBANY) was created to serve the educational, professional, and social needs of Muslim legal professionals and law students living and working in the New York metropolitan area.

Q:  What has MuBANY done so far?
A:  See our Past Events section.

Q:  What is on the horizon?
A:  In addition to serving lawyers and law students, MuBANY is also concerned about the needs of the community at large, and our plans for meeting those needs include establishing community legal clinics, creating attorney referral systems, and holding “Know Your Rights” seminars.  In doing so, we hope to assist other community organizations with addressing the many issues that face our community in today’s world at large.  Similarly, MuBANY hopes to learn from other groups and organizations about the legal needs of its own constituents and how MuBANY may be in a position to help.  While MuBANY does not provide direct legal advice to individuals or organizations, there are many ways that we can educate our communities and address concerns concerning the law and legal issues.

Q:  What can I do to get involved?
A:  You can also help the community by taking action as detailed in our Take Action page.

Q.  How can I become a member?
A:  Become a member by visiting our Membership page

Q.  What are the benefits of membership?
A:  Members get discounts to MuBANY sponsored events and programs.  In addition, members get access to members only programs like the Mentorship Program.  In the future, members will get preference for certain MuBANY programs.

Q.  What are the Membership dues?
A:  Membership dues are based on the type of employment one has.  For law students, the first year of membership is waived.  After that it is $20 a year.  For public interest attorneys, solo practitioners, government attorneys and judges dues are $35.  For attorneys working in a small firm dues are $50.  Finally for those working in a medium/large firm (over 20 attorneys) or serve as in-house counsel dues are $75.

Q.  Who are MuBANY's members?
A:  MuBANY's members comprise a wide range of the legal field.  Attorneys in the public service sector represent all levels of government from federal, state and City.  In addition, members who work for private firms hail from corporate firms, mid-size firms as well as solo practitioners.  In addition, MuBANY law student members currently attend Brooklyn, Cardozo, Columbia, CUNY, Fordham, New York Law School, NYU, Rutgers and St. Johns.
